Penélope, X. M. Díaz Castro

One step forward and one step back, Galiza,
And the web of your dreams does not move.
The hope in your eyes stretches out.
The oxen plough and it rains.

A roar of very distant ships
Interrupts your sleep, which is as smooth as silk.
But you wrap yourself in thousand-year-old sheets,
And in your dreams you hear the rain again.

Someday the paths will bring back
The people they stole away. God is the same.
One furrow after another. Holy God!
And everything must pay its tithe.

Drying the drizzle in the fields like a dream,
Time moves on from Parga to Pastoriza.
Autumn slowly buries itself, furrow after furrow.
One step forward and one step back, Galiza!
